As a transplanted Mississippi artist, I remain strongly influenced by the mystical pull of the South. Although Ive lived and worked in New York City and in Esopus, NY for many years, the remembered images of my childhood still permeate the subjects I choose to paint now. The woods of Esopus echo the backwoods of my summer camp near Biloxi, Mississippi and my neighborhood stream became the Esopus Creek. From both regions, Im affected by the natural beauty of the landscape, the barns, lush gardens, overgrown grasses, creeks and riverbeds. Painting outdoors, my work evolves to reflect the ever changing, elusive beauty of nature. I limit details and try to capture the essence of natural forms and structures, as well as the sensitive quality of change in light and shadow. In my studio, I focus on the patterns and designs of nature - lights and darks, positive and negative spaces. I work with an approach that is neither absolutely realistic, nor is it totally imagined. It is intuitive. My paintings are an intimate and expressive reflection of a moment in time. |
